4 Ways to Break the Ice
Driving learner engagement can be tough for presenters.
Thu Jan 01 2026
Driving learner engagement can be tough for presenters. Beginning with a carefully crafted icebreaker can help. A thoughtful start sets the tone for interaction, focus, and connection throughout the rest of the experience.
1. Surprise audiences.
A query associated with an unexpected fact, image, or short story can grab learners' attention and set an energetic tone that immediately pulls them into the session.
2. Help learners relate to one another.
Light, personal questions such as "Dog, cat, or neither?" foster connection and encourage participants to engage more openly during the course.
3. Don't require a correct answer.
Inquire about experiences and opinions, such as what learners want to gain from the session, rather than facts and figures. That approach reduces pressure, encourages participation, and helps you understand learner motivations.
4. Be Tactical.
Asking questions that will reveal learners' baseline knowledge of a crucial presentation topic helps gauge where they stand so you can tailor the discussion to meet their level of understanding.
